Bali is a very quiet place, as soon as you get out of the most touristic places, and it is a safe place outside those very touristic places. The balinese are great people and they are very pleased to welcome you.
Shots : no shots are compulsory for Bali.
There is no malaria on the island, but it is not the case on other islands. So, if you plan to travel somewhere else than Bali, please check.
Visas : since February
2004, you need a visa. You can take it directly at the airport for 25 USD and it is valid 30 days, better to have USD with you when you arrived to shorten the wait. Can be long queue, but no more than an hour. Otherwise you can take it at the embassy, for 60 days. Now depending on the country you come from, it is not always possible to have the visa at the airport. Better to check with the Indonesian Ambassy in your country first.
Climate : Bali is close to the tropics, so it is a warm country and the temperature is always around 30° degree, all year long. The only change is the rainy season from November to March, with rains at nights and in the evenings. It is also the warmer season, due to the high humidity level. In comparison, July and August are the coolest months especially at night. It is about 20-25 degres at night which maens freezing ! But you can dive all year long and this is good news !!!
Day : the day starts early in Bali, around 6 AM, but it finishes early, with a sunset at 6:30PM. So, in the villages, the evenings are short.
Bargaining : everything has to be bargained in Bali, it is part of the fun and a good way to have a small talk with the locals.
Cost : Life here is not very expensive. Only if you need luxury, very fancy restaurants and fancy bars...By eating really local, the budget in Padangbai is 0.5 euros per person. By eating in small restaurant, about 3-4 euros per person. The rest of the island (tulamben, lovina, pemutaran, etc...) are a little bit more expensive, rather 5-6 euros. Same for the hotels prices range from several hundreds dollars to 2-3 euros the night. It all depends on your taste and budget !
Population : Bali has about 3,5
millions inhabitants, about 95% are Hinduist. There are a lot of ceremonies all year long around the island and it is quite easy to stop and join, but only wit the proper clothing. They speak their own language, balinese, as well as Indonesia. But most of the balinese can speak english.
