Local Life and Good Manners

Local life. Good to know!!!

Temples : In Bali, when you enter in a temple it is imperative to wear a sarong and a belt around the waist, woman and man : no distingo !!!
Keep with you a sarong and belt on the go,  you will comfortably approach a ceremony or entering in a temple.

Priests : Do not pass them during a ceremony and make sure never to sit in front of them, or you find a level above them when you sit.

People who praying : Do not pass them.

The right hand : Use it to give or receive, whether it be money, food or any property. The left hand is considered “unclean.”

Good Manners:

Meals : It is common to eat with your fingers. Just those of the right hand, oh yes, the left hand is impure ‘is that of hygiene’. Indeed we uses for shower, the toilet paper you find in the hotel and most restaurants.

The head of children : Even if it’s very tempting to pass his hand over their head in sign of affection as we often do in Europe : Avoid !

To kiss : Not at all “trendy” here or moved, even if it is for a thank. “Terima kasih banyak” (thank you very much) and a beautiful smile will be enough…

The smile : Keep it in all circumstances !!!
It is especially needed here and is the key to getting what you want or set a small dispute in the best conditions.

You may want to make a present to a Balinese who invites you at home : do as it is customary here : coffee, tea, sugar, cakes, rice, or products for the home such as laundry or other utensils of everyday life will be greatly appreciated.

The School in Bali

The Balinese school system is kindergarten, elementary, middle and high school, like in France.
The primary begins at 6-7 years.
Schedules of schools vary.

In Padangbai kindergarten is from 7:30 to 9:30.
Primary school : from 6:30 to 10:30 for small classes, and until 12:00 for the biggest.
For college : classes can be held in the morning or afternoon.

As for the uniforms they change every two days and are different depending schools, villages, etc…

The school is not compulsory and children go there if parents have sufficient income.
Here in Padangbai, kindergarten is paying ; Primary and college are free but must still buy uniforms and books, pay for meals and transports.

Higher education is all paid and there, it’s really based on family income.
In order to make long studies one must already be “rich”.
According to a doctor with whom I spoke, it takes 100 euros for medical studies …so it is not the everyone !
